Horse Door for Energy Code-Compliant Stable
Some horse owners like to heat or even cool their stables. Recently, more and more building departments are mandating that any structure that is heated or cooled comply with the 2018 Energy Code. In the past, horse doors were made out of wood and leaked. Regular steel man doors are only 36" wide which is often too narrow to walk a horse through or manure carts, ATVs, etc.. The door we designed and built has numerous advantages to previous options. They include:
- They are made of steel - horses won't chew on them.,
- They are 4 foot wide so that a horse can be walked in and out.
- The panels are insulted between the steel skins.
- They operate up and down - they don't require horses to move out of their way when opened or closed.
- They use counterweights and so don't need electricity.
- The doors are nearly airtight making it easier to comply with the Energy Code or pass blower-door tests.
Doors are 4' wide so that a person can walk a horse through. Wide enough for manure carts, ATVs, etc.
And they don't swing in and out and so don't require the horse to move out of the way.
Counter weights are made of 2" solid steel rod. They lower into 3.5" steel pipe mounted to the walls.
2" solid steel rod counterweight drops in and out of 3.5" pipe when door is operated. No electricity needed.
3.5" steel pipe used as a protective sleeve for the 2" solid rod counter weights.
Ball-bearinged pulleys.
Stainless steel cable.
Garage door tracks installed at an angle so that the door becomes tight as it lowers.
Weather stripping on sides and bottom.
Sturdy steel handle that horse can't damage.
Smooth, quiet, easy operation.
Exterior.
